Waking Up Early for School

From the Teacher, Homeschoolers No More, Lunch Box Ideas No Comments

My children are up before the sun is up. They HAVE to wake up at 5am (half an hour earlier for the oldest child) to get ready for school. There are days that there’s no more time for breakfast, just a quick drink of warm milk or a few spoonfuls of oatmeal before the school service goes beep-beeping.

More often than not, they just bring their breakfast with them to school. Sometimes they bring sandwiches or oatmeal. And fruits and/or milk. Plus other food I’ve prepared for them.

They have to be in bed around 8 – 8:30 pm. And while they are sleeping, I have to get their stuff ready: uniforms for the next day and snacks to bring. I also check on their bags to see if they have extra shirts to use and/or all their school stuff are inside.

I want to say I can’t wait for summer which means I don’t have to wake up at 4:00 everyday but that would mean 3 bored and hungry kids in the house.

Boy Scout Goes A-camping

Enrichment, Grade 4, Homeschoolers No More, The Son, Weekends No Comments

My Boy Scout is going camping today. The scouts will have an over night camping. I’ve already prepped the things he will bring and hubby was shocked to see how much food I prepared: several brick boxes of milk, water bottles, bananas, a small loaf of bread, cookies, biscuits and even a can of pork and beans.

I also put several clothes to last him several days.

He is bringing a tent and a sleeping bag. His contribution to the group are several bags of charcoal for cooking.

I wanted to bring him to his pulmonologist first before the camping but we didn’t have time to visit the doctor. I hope he won’t have an asthma attack though he brought his inhaler with him, as he always does.

Mr. Potato Head Modelling Clay Project

Artistic Expressions, Enrichment, Homeschoolers No More, Images, The Son 2 Comments

This is Mr. Potato Head made from modeling clay of different colors.

Mr Potato Head

How to do the modeling clay project:

  1. Draw the figure you want to make using the modeling clay. Pattern the size of the drawing to the board where you will put the modeling clay character.
  2. Use rolling pin to flatten the modeling clay. In our case, we used a discarded cling wrap carton roll as rolling pin.
  3. Use other materials to shape the body parts like a plastic knife for a more precise cutting of the modeling clay.
  4. Make the parts of the (cartoon) character you want to make.
  5. Put the parts together.

Don’t forget to take step-by-step photos of your art project to document your progress 🙂

Reading: Decoding Skills

Enrichment, From the Teacher, Language Arts, Preparatory Lessons, Reading 1 Comment

Decoding is the ability to translate written language (units of sounds and/or phonetics = letters symbolizing sounds and words) as spoken words.

Decoding is the ability to put together letters to form words like C-A-T being read as “cat”

Decoding is a very important skill in developing the reading skills of children.

  • Children should be able to recognize the letters of the alphabet first and match the phonetic sounds that go with each letter before they can begin to decode. First words to be read are the CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words
  • Children should be able to put letters together through phonetic sounds to be able to decode, like the example above C-A-T for cat
  • Alongside decoding, children should be able to sight -read commonly used words for incorporating with the decoded CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words

How to start decoding?

Start with familiar names and brands that are used on a daily basis and you are starting in the right direction. So better start “reading” those labels like street signs, consumer products, brand names (be careful with these though for the child might get used to reading expensive brand names, LOL)

Don’t forget to have the children “read” their names too, even if they can’t write it yet 🙂
